    BBQ – Derek’s place

    4:00 pm to late

    Venue: Derek’s place
    No Charge event
    BYO wine
Food Your committee arranges the meat dishes and we ask participants to contribute by providing a salad or dessert, sufficient for about eight people. This year we would ask that if your street address has an odd number, that you provide a dessert and an even number, a salad.

Event on no matter the weather as the venue has covered outdoor areas to suit most occasions. The BBQ is a great opportunity and time to mix and mingle.

Anne asks that you to bring any screw caps along that you have been collecting over the holiday period for our donation to Kan Tabs for Kids

See more on Club BBQ at Derek’s 4pm Sunday 30th January – wet or fine.

    Tasting - Confidant Wines

    7:45 - 9:45 pm

Venue: Johnsonville Community Centre Hall, 30 Moorefield Rd, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037 - Directions
Entry fee: Members $15 Guests $19
    Presenter: Victor Kattenbelt

As you may be aware, this month’s tasting was going to be from Bald Hills of Central Otago. Their company has decided that they will not present to the public while Omicron is circulating so widely, so this tasting to us has been postponed.

The Club has been fortunate to be able to secure Victor and Confidant Wines for our evening with only a week’s notice. We are not sure of the precise make-up of the wines for the evening at this time, so come along for a surprise evening and enjoy.

Confidant Wines is a small (boutique) local importer of Portuguese wines in Wellington distributing the well-regarded Casa Santos Lima winery and a range of notable NZ wineries that are available in selected retail outlets and a number of Wellington restaurants.

Victor Kattenbelt has been around the Wellington wine scene for a number of years and travels to Europe most years, for wine trade expos in France, Netherlands and Germany, and to visit his suppliers in Portugal. He last presented to us in August 2020.

Sarah and Russell have between them just over a 65-year tour of duty with the NZ wine industry.

    Sarah Inkersell
    Sarah Inkersell

Sarah started in the industry during the summer holidays with Montana in their Hawke’s Bay vineyards. She worked in Auckland making wine with Soljans while studying for her winemaking degree. With her degree, she settled in Marlborough, the heart of NZ’s wine industry in the 1990s.

Russell transitioned from a life with the NZ Forest Service to establishing vineyards in Marlborough with Daniel Le Brun as an early mentor in the 1980s when there were just 3 wine companies in Marlborough.

Collectively, the pair have been involved with almost every facet of the industry, from establishing vineyards to developing export markets, participating in industry sensory tasting panels, wine judging, wine export evaluation panels and annual consultancy to the Southern Pinot Noir Workshop on matters of microbial influence with Pinot Noir.

    Russell Hooper
    Russell Hooper

They are owners of Fairbourne Estate, specialists of single site wines that were very successful in the sophisticated London market in particular. Today sales continue in the USA with the brand Fernhook.

For the past three years, they have been living in Wellington enjoying the city and the opportunities it brings. Sarah is with MPI working as Senior Adviser in the wine export department and Russell is with Sika NZ.

We will be tasting some gold medal-winning wines of the 2021 NZ International Wine show, the results of which were announced in February of this year. In fact, two of these wines were the trophy varietals, so it shall be fun to see if they are indeed still as good as gold.
