Tasting - Artisan Winegrowers of Central Otago

    7:45 - 9:45 pm

Venue: Johnsonville Community Centre Hall, 30 Moorefield Rd, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037 – Directions.

    Cost: Members $12, Guests $16

    Presenter: Roberta Manell Montero, Errero

We will be tasting up to 10 wines but will reduce the quantity of each pour to take account. This should be an opportunity to explore a unique outlook on wine production. Come along and enjoy the night.

Points of note – Artisan Winegrowers of Central Otago

    • One hundred and thirty-three years of winegrowing experience
    • Eighteen different wines
    • Twenty-six hectares of vines
    • Twelve footprints in the vineyard
    • Six artisan winegrowers
    • One uncompromising commitment: Quality and integrity, above all else.

    About

The Artisan Winegrowers of Central Otago (AWCO) is a modest group of like-minded friends who share a common interest and devotion to small batch, high-quality viticulture and winemaking that speak of a place and a person.

It’s as much a story about the land, the aspect, the soil, the geology and the climate as it is the personality of the grower, their statutes, the decisions they make and the little part of them that finds a home in every bottle of wine.

These are one-man-bands; individuals or couples who you will find in the vineyard each morning, at the winery during the afternoon and fussing over paperwork and sales of an evening.

The crossover between passion and obsession is a fine line; a tightrope that each member playfully strides passionately along.

    Tasting - Foxes Island Wines

    7:45 - 9:45 pm

Venue: Johnsonville Community Centre Hall, 30 Moorefield Rd, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037 – Directions.

    Cost: Members $16, Guests $20

    Presenter: John Belsham, Founder

    Wines:

    • 2011 Foxes Island Dry Riesling
    • 2014 Foxes Island Sur Lie Aged Sauvignon Blanc (new release)
    • 2012 Foxes Island Icon La Lapine white
    • 2011 Foxes Island Chardonnay
    • 2014 FOX Pinot Noir
    • 2009 Foxes Island Pinot Noir

    History

John Belsham founded Foxes Island in 1992 to focus on exquisitely made, regionally expressive wines; exactly what he had learned to do in France. He initially made the wines for Foxes Island from his Rapaura vineyard on the Wairau plains and produced the very first Foxes Island wine: Chardonnay, vintage 1992.

In search of a Pinot Noir site, Belsham identified the overgrown and neglected 20-hectare Awatere property in 1998 and envisaged the Belsham Awatere estate. With seven distinct terraces and exceptional soil profiles, the land was planted primarily to Pinot Noir along with select blocks dedicated to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.

24 years on, Belsham’s passion for producing exceptional wines has yet to wane; limited in production and genuinely hand crafted, all the wines hold pride of place at the Fox House.

Wellington’s outstanding fine dining without pretension

Beef fillet on mash & onion ringsThis year’s mid-year dinner is at Logan Brown in Cuba Street, This, as most of you know, is a seriously good restaurant and therefore comes at a cost. Tea and coffee will still be available but you will need pay for those when you order. You also need to be aware that this venue does have some historical features that make it highly unlikely that tables can be grouped together in a manner that allows for some of the larger seating requirements that have been requested in the past. So please be prepared for this. We will update you all closer to the date should that change.

Arrival time is 7pm for seating and orders at 7:30pm. See you there.

    Tasting - Elderton Wines

    7:45 - 9:45 pm

condolences-dinner-elderton-wines577e19462ed7cVenue: Johnsonville Community Centre Hall, 30 Moorefield Rd, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037 – Directions.

    Cost: Members $12, Guests $16

    Presenter: Keith Tibble, Eurovintage

Elderton have some of the oldest wines in the Barossa and seeing what age can do to well-made Aussie reds is, I’m sure, going to provide us with some delightful surprises. Presenter for this evening will be Keith Tibble, a long-time friend of the club, and he will begin the tasting with a couple of Barossa whites to appease those club members who have a preference for those styles of wine.

A short history – after time spent working in Saudi Arabia, Neil and Lorraine Ashmead, moved to the Barossa in 1979, after Lorraine’s father identified a beautiful home with potential. The homestead, in the heart of the township of Nuriootpa, was surrounded by extremely old Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. At a time where demand for Australian table wine was negligible, the vineyard had become derelict. After years of no interest, the real estate agent eventually offered the Ashmeads the 72-acre vineyard as a bonus, as part of the sale of the homestead. Three years later, after restoring the vineyard, Elderton Wines was born.

The wines on the evening will include but will not necessarily be restricted to:

    • 2015 Serafino Fiano – McLaren Vale
    • 2015 Pikes Tradition Riesling – Clare Valley
    • Elderton E Series Shiraz-Cabernet – Barossa
    • 2014 Elderton Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon – Eden Valley
    • 2013 Elderton Greenock Two Shiraz-Grenache-Mourvèdre (Dry grown old vine western Barossa)
    • 2013 Elderton GTS (Grand Tourer) Shiraz – (dry grown/old vine home block valley floor Nuriootpa)

    2014 The Chatterer Syrah
    2014 The Gravels Syrah
    2013 The Nest Merlot
    2013 Stoned Crow Syrah

The Gimblett Road area of Hawke’s Bay is synonymous with the production of world-renowned wines. From these much-celebrated shingle soils, hails the region’s most exciting boutique label: Squawking Magpie.

The “cradle of quality” for Squawking Magpie is the Woodlands Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels area, the first 4 hectares of which were planted in 1995. In 2002, a new 20-hectare vineyard was developed as a joint venture and planted predominantly in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

From the very first plantings, an emphasis has been placed on creating outstanding wines by focusing on viticultural excellence. Owner and director Gavin Yortt and his team hold the firm belief that great wine comes from great grapes.

And the proof is certainly there to be tasted: Squawking Magpie wines exhibit all the elegance and finesse of a unique terroir and stand testament to the superiority of single vineyard estate management and production.

Those of us who have the luxury (if you could call it such) to watch Paul Henry in the mornings will know that he has an occasional session on wines with Yvonne Lorkin. Yvonne is involved in many activities relating to the wine industry including some writing for the NZ Herald.  In an item last June she described the Hunters Riesling 2014 as follows

“It’s easy to become a Riesling recruit without sending your wallet sideways. You’ll find yourself ticking boxes all over the show. Green apple, check. Lime, check. Lemon verbena, check. Raindrops on hot rocks, check. Long, lean, stylish and elegant, if there were such a thing as Riesling royalty in Marlborough, Hunter’s household would be the full polo team. Sniff, sip, savour.”

The 2014 is not in our tasting come Wednesday, but the 2012 is.  Clearly, it will have benefitted from time in the bottle.  We are looking forward to the evening and anticipating a great turnout from members.  The presentation will include:

    2016 Hunter’s Pinot Gris
    2012 Hunter’s Riesling
    2015 Hunter’s Chardonnay
    2016 Hunter’s Sauvignon Blanc
    2016 Hunter’s Rose
    2014 Hunter’s Pinot Noir
    2014 Hunter’s Hukapapa Dessert Riesling

Hunter’s Wines have won more than 165 gold medals at national and international wine competitions, and we’re still breaking new ground with new varietals, new wine-making techniques and consistently seeking the best for our wines.Still family-owned, we’re nurturing the next generation of Hunter’s winemakers ensuring we’ll be around for years to come.

Through Jane’s strong determination, together with the talents of Chief Winemaker Gary Duke and General Manager Peter Macdonald Hunter’s original vineyard area has increased by 2.5 times its original size and the company’s annual output has grown to around 75,000 cases of wine, nearly 80% of which is exported.

Budburst: Natural Wine & Food Festival

    Non-club event

Budburst is New Zealand’s first Natural Wine & Food Festival, we aim to bring together everyday consumers in a friendly and festive environment where they can try unique wines that challenge the status quo and celebrate transparency, sustainability and quality. This one-day event will bring together NZ wine producers who are pushing boundaries and some international winemakers who share the same sentiment of keeping intervention at a minimum.

While many wine events in New Zealand are geared towards the wine professional, Budburst is also designed for the consumer. We’re building an event where you can come to have fun, discover something new, meet the people who make these wines, eat great food and listen to live music. budburst.nz
