Mission Estate winemaker Paul Mooney retires after 45 years

After a 45+ year tenure, we have farewelled our famed winemaker, Paul Mooney.

How do you sum up a career that long? Paul has been here since 1979 and has seen numerous changes within the industry and Mission itself.

He has always loved innovation in wine and has been deeply involved in sustainability in the winery. We are 60% more water efficient and 67% more energy efficient than other like-sized NZ wineries, making Mission an industry leader.

If forced to pick one, Paul feels that 2009 was his favourite vintage. It is no coincidence that the 2009 Jewelstone Cabernet Merlot blend (now known as ‘Antoine’) received outstanding reviews, culminating in the infamous tasting led by Lisa Perotti-Brown MV, held in Hong Kong in 2011.

Jewelstone ‘Antoine’ came third in the line-up which included five French First Growths valued at thousands of dollars a bottle.

Paul is a treasured person around Mission, and we wish him well for his next chapter of history in the making.

Having worked alongside Paul for the past 13 years EIT graduate Alex Roper is now relishing the challenge of honouring his legacy, expertly assisted by Jillian Meier and the wider team.

This expertise, passion and dedication are the foundations of Mission’s excellence. The team is excited to be continuing to make history in the Mission spirit.

What a great turnout for our Trifecta event from the Hawkes Bay vineyards!

This event was well attended by Club members, plus we had four guests attend. There were eight wines to sample for the evening, plus the owner Peter Robertson was there to let us in on some of his planting/vineyard secrets.

Peter explained to us how he started his wine career working for McWilliams making a rose spritzer that they used to export to Fiji! Times have certainly changed as have tasted in the 21st century.

See Stop Press!! Cellar Club Wins Trifecta of Top Hawke’s Bay wineries!!Information is now freely passed between the Old-World vintners and the New-World vintners as are cuttings of the different wine varieties. The eight wines for the evening were:

  • 2022 Fiesta Rose – a Syrah dominant variety, floral with strawberry and melon on the tongue
  • 2022 Robertson Pinot Gris – this variety was from Brother John of Mission wines who introduced Peter to a 15-year-old bottle of this Pinot!
  • 2021 Bergman Chardonnay – named after the Ingrid Bergman roses on their property. A more modern style rather than the heavy buttery style of old
  • 2021 Barrique Fermented Viognier – surprisingly smooth in the mouth with fresh mineral notes
  • 2021 Back Block Syrah – this variety had its first vintage in 2000, spicy and this is their biggest-selling wine!
  • 2020 Ohiti Estate Cabernet Sauvignon – light and spicy but smooth with a year in old oak
  • 2021 Hillside Syrah – actually grown on land that Peter was invited to use to grow grapes. Woody but smooth in the mouth.
  • 2019 Reserve Vintage Gold Label Cabernet Merlot – a Bordeaux style wine, black fruits with subtle spice, this is wine is closed with the traditional cork stopper.

Tasting – Te Mata w/ Keith Tibble and Brett Newell, June 2022

The Te Mata evening last month was a great success, with Keith Tibble and Brett Newell from EuroVintage filling in for Te Mata’s Reps. They were both informative and interesting about the vintages, the people who own and work the vineyards and the different classes of wine that Te Mata produces and sells. There was a good level of orders from members.

The vertical tasting of the two Cabernet Merlots was also interesting, as these helped educate us on the different processes that are used on the different classes of grapes the Winery handles. The taste of these two wines was an eye-opener.

NB: Don’t forget Brett Newell’s tip that you don’t decant older wines too early before you want to drink them, as their taste will not be the best by the time you drink them. ‘Old’ is anything older than ten years.

Update on Te Mata orders

The orders are in hand if a little delayed. Keith Tibble from EuroVintage has been ill and given the orders are compiled in Auckland and then shipped as a single order to Wellington, there has been a delay. The orders are due to Murray by the end of this week and as soon as received will be delivered to you or arrangements made. The charges at this point have not gone on to your credit cards. Apologies for the delay.

A great presentation from Guillaume with assistance from Esther. There was a good turnout of members and Maison Noire was more than happy with the level of the orders. A little glitch with getting some orders to members, but this is about sorted now.

  • 2016 Maison Noire Cabernet Merlot
  • 2016 Maison Noire Syrah

An interesting aspect of the night was that members were able to pay directly to Maison Noire. The marvels of modern technology, particularly when it comes to taking your money from you.
